Major credit cards like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are widely accepted. They can be used at most businesses, including supermarkets and public transport. American Express may attract a higher processing fee at certain locations.
Tap and pay is generally accepted, including on Adelaide Metro buses, trains, and trams. Contactless payments via credit/debit cards and smart devices are common.
Shop trading hours in Adelaide vary based on location (CBD, Metropolitan, or Proclaimed Shopping Districts) and shop size. Exempt shops (smaller shops) have more flexible hours. Standard hours for non-exempt shops in the CBD are until 9PM on weekdays, and 5PM on Saturday's and Sunday's.
Most shops are closed on Christmas Day and have restricted hours on Anzac Day (12 PM to 5 PM). Extended hours may apply during the Christmas period, including Boxing Day, and on Black Friday.
Always check with individual stores for specific hours.
Adelaide offers extensive free WiFi coverage, particularly in the city centre, North Adelaide, and surrounding parklands. The ADL Free powered by TPG Telecom network provides high-speed internet access across these areas, thanks to a recent infrastructure upgrade (2023-24). Here are some confirmed locations across the city:
- ADL Free powered by TPG Telecom – Available throughout the CBD, North Adelaide, and parklands.
- Rundle Mall
- Adelaide Central Market
- Adelaide Botanic Garden
- Adelaide Zoo
- Art Gallery of South Australia
- State Library of South Australia
- Adelaide Airport
- Adelaide Central Plaza
Security Tip: While public WiFi is fine for general browsing, exercise caution when accessing sensitive information such as banking details or personal accounts. Consider using a VPN for enhanced security.

Adelaide is an extremely walkable city - especially in and around the central business district. The city’s design, originally planned by Colonel William Light, is based on a grid layout with wide streets, which makes getting around on foot straightforward.
One of Adelaide’s great advantages is its compact size. Most of the key attractions (museums, galleries, shopping strips, cafes, and gardens) are clustered around the CBD and North Adelaide. The area enclosed by the surrounding parklands is roughly 2 km wide and long, and places like North Terrace and Rundle Street are just a block apart.
The terrain is mostly flat, which adds to the ease of walking, and the extensive network of green spaces and parklands creates a safe and pleasant atmosphere for visitors on foot.

Best Time to Visit
Cruise ships usually just spend one precious day in port — and we want to help you make the most of it.
To give you the best chance of an enjoyable visit, we’ve created a custom “Best Time to Visit” score for each month, unique to each destination. The score is calculated using factors that are likely to matter the most:
- Comfortable temperatures
- Lower rainfall and fewer rainy days
- More daylight hours
- Moderate UV levels
Each score is based on historical monthly averages and adjusted for each port’s climate. We weight the above factors — for example, long daylight hours and fewer wet days matter more when you're only ashore for part of the day. That's also why no month gets a 10/10, as there's always a trade-off. For example, warmer weather and clear skies comes with higher UV (and more sweat!).
This chart isn't meant to suggest that a port is bad to visit outside the highest rated months — each season provides something memorable for each location. But if you’re deciding when to cruise, this will hopefully give you the best chance of having perfect weather on your visit.
